Well, well, well...this year is quickly coming to an end and like most people I have the nostalgia bug; reminiscing over both personal and public moments, trends, and life lessons. Many will say this year was the most terrible yet, but just like in life there are bad moments and then there are good ones. There were plenty good moments, awe-inspiring innovations, and new trends that 2016 brought us, which is paving the way for a pretty awesome future.

For one, 2016 has turned gray into one of the most beloved neutrals, whether it is a warm or cool tone, it is often paired with a white trim and dark wood flooring to create an elegant, inviting, and contemporary look. Also people have started reverting back to all white color color schemes, adding pops of color (usually in some kind of blue) with the decor. Below are examples of these two (most popular - my opinion) trending schemes of 2016. I also think these schemes had a hand in shaping the trends of this upcoming year.

So for this post I'm turning toward the future and sharing some interior color trends that I think will be relevant throughout 2017. I have searched through design magazines, paint color forecasts, Pinterest, watched hundreds of design shows, as well as gained personal insight by working with a multitude of people to help find the perfect colors for their home. Plus, since I've already discussed Exterior Color Trends and Interior Decor Trends, it's only natural to talk about all the incredible color schemes available for your interior spaces. All of the images were found on Google to support my trends.
Alrighty then, let's get this party started...
JEWEL TONES

I'm starting with my favorite trend this time...JEWEL TONES!!!! The colors are just so vibrantly rich and adds an instant feeling of luxury to almost any space. However, this trend is definitely not for the faint of heart, but those that are bold risk takers, I highly encourage you to give this one a try. You could even tone down the harshness by only painting an accent wall/area or maybe even just the furniture could be done in jewel tones, while the walls stay neutral (keep reading to the next trend for some neutral color options).
The colors used in this trend consist of deep greens, rich blues, majestic purples, and spicy reds. Also the use of metallic finishes, faux furs, and even glittered textures are usually paired with these intense colors. Here are a few schemes I put together (using Dunn-Edwards colors) that embrace this opulent jewel tone trend:

Ugh, so gorgeous!!
I fell in love with this trend so much I even picked which colors I would paint my own apartment (if I were allowed) based off this jewel tone goodness. You'll be able to see my little scheme after a few examples of some beautiful jewel toned interiors.

NEUTRAL MIX-UP

I truly believe that neutrals will never go out of style, but more and more people are finding ways to modernize this otherwise stereotyped traditional color scheme. Above, I touched on how gray is becoming the leading neutral, but taupe is still the number one go-to color when it comes to selecting a neutral palette. This trend is being modernized by print/texture layering in monochromatic colors, dramatic shade contrasts like going from a stark white to a charcoal gray, as well as neutral on neutral pairs such as gray & cream, cream & white, white & taupe, taupe & gray, etc...

These swatches represent some of the most popular neutral colors being utilized throughout numerous interior spaces. Some of them were chosen because off re-occurring colors between images or colors that come up frequently between my own clients. I think neutral colors are popular not only because they're "safe choices", but also because they can transform with any design style. For example, just because you select a brown color doesn't necessarily mean your interior is traditional or rustic, it could very well have a modern, contemporary aesthetic instead.
LIGHT, BRIGHT, & FRESH

Now, before you start thinking..."WHAT THE HECK! YELLOW FLOORS!!!" just listen as to all the ways this trend could be taking 2017 by storm. Since citrus colors are growing in popularity through food as well as fashion, they are also starting to be seen in several interior color schemes because they provide a space with an unexpected fresh pop. Many designers are starting to pair these types of colors with soft pastels, lighter grays, whites, off-whites, and even with each other! Most people want a light and airy space anyways...well this is just a little twist on an otherwise common color scheme. I think having yellow floors could be a really cool feature (depending on your home's design style of course), especially when paired with an ultra-bright white or a soft subtle gray.
Below, I have put together five of my own light, bright, and fresh schemes...that might just be the inspiration you need for your next interior project!!

Aren't they super fun!!! I would imagine I would always have a smile on my face when hanging out in a space with these types of colors. This was the trend I was most intrigued by, simply because it is the hardest to pull off, but the phenomenal interiors I was able to find definitely do this trend justice. There is even a kitchen with cabinets done in a color similar to Strawberry Jam DE 5076. ENJOY!
Didn't I tell you...so crisp and clean yet surprisingly fun!!!
WHIMSICAL & DREAMY

All the wanderlust dreamers, fairy tale princess', and playful designers...this is ABSOLUTELY the trend for you. I mean it takes whimsical humor to a fresh new place and it's another trend I think will be popping up more and more throughout the upcoming year. It is full of pastels, floral prints/motifs, creams, quirky statues, and bold accent pieces. The following colors could all easily be used to achieve a whimsical, fantasy like interior.

Unicorns, rainbows, and fairies welcome...
OMG...did you see that powder blue interior with the unicorn head arch?!?!?!?! How stinking cute is that...if you want modern whimsical, that is the way to do it for sure. Also there are more subtle schemes for those that don't want to take the trend to the extreme.
EARTHY MODERN

Okay, now when I say "earthy modern" I am solely referring to the color scheme and not the design style as there are many ways to interpret an earthy style. However, for this trend I want to introduce some new ways earth tone colors are being combined. These schemes often accompany materials such as natural wood, lush textiles, nature inspired prints, and other organic textures. I have put together a few schemes that I think represent my take on this trend. It may not seem like much has changed, but trust me...pay attention to the way the colors are paired.

Most of the colors are muted in tone...even the brighter clay color is still softened in intensity. There is also the addition of gray, which can be seen through greenish-grays as well as the ever popular "graige" that is taking over the design world. Again, like I said previously, this trend doesn't necessarily have to be used in traditional or rustic interiors, it can be used in more modern spaces paired with industrial interior finishes or more glamorous materials to achieve a more sophisticated look. I particularly like the space with the all white deer head on the wall, which contrasts with a rich dark brown background...keep your eye out!!
Even though this is the end of my 2017 Home Interior Color Trends list...I will still be sharing a few more things before the new year begins. Next, you'll find some of the leading color trend spotters of the industry and their selections for 2017 Color of the Year.
2017 COLORS OF THE YEAR
Throughout this next section I'll be sharing color choices from Pantone, Dunn-Edwards, Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams, and Behr. Behr actually selected three color palettes they think will be the hottest colors of the year and boy are they right on target. 2017 is looking to be a year full of fun, unexpected accents, humorous nods, and COLOR...bring on the COLOR!!
PANTONE COLOR OF THE YEAR

I'm getting the feels guys...it's green, how freaking awesome is that?! Pantone's color of the year, Greenery, is all kinds of fresh. It was chosen to reflect nature, rebirth, regrowth and to remind us how much our environment provides for our way of life. Pantone specifically states, "...the fortifying attributes of Greenery signals consumers to take a deep breath, oxygenate and reinvigorate." Inspiring much??? Haha, I love this for so many reasons, but mainly because of the universal power a color could have on the world and it's people. Head on over to Pantone's website to learn more about why they selected Greenery as 2017 Color of the Year.

DUNN EDWARDS COLOR OF THE YEAR

I think this color was a great choice for Dunn-Edwards as this honey mustard color was a hit among the fashion industry. It is also a personal favorite of mine because any form of yellow is so unexpected and I love the element of surprise in design...I think it adds a certain freshness. Honey Glow would also be perfect to incorporate in Mid-Century Modern design styles since it gives off a totally retro vibe. Check out Dunn-Edwards' site to see what thought went into choosing this vibrant and energetic color.

BENJAMIN MOORE COLOR OF THE YEAR

Does this color not have dark and mysterious written all over it? It just oozes elegance and class, which I think would fit in perfectly with the jewel tone schemes. Dark purple is becoming more and more popular, kind of acting like a navy almost. It is also used when charcoal gray seems to harsh in a space. Shadow was chosen because it is a master at being allusive and enigmatic, making it the ideal color for creating ambiance. Read more as well as browse through examples of Shadow in action on Benjamin Moore's website.

SHERWIN WILLIAMS COLOR OF THE YEAR

Of course a neutral makes the cut! Leave it to Sherwin Williams to please every customer with this soft, rich taupe. Poised Taupe could probably be used in almost any space, with pretty much any design style, and work beautifully. This color was selected to promote coziness and warmth within your home...usually when a color pulls at your heart-strings, it is sure to be a winner! If you want to learn more about Poised Taupe and all the ways it is being used, then check out Sherwin Williams' site.

BEHR COLOR PALETTES OF THE YEAR

Behr's color palette's touch on the whimsical, the jewel tones, as well as the vibrant punch of color. These palette's encompass all of the other colors of the year from the other company's in some way or another. There is a bright yellow, a neutral taupe, and even a soft green. The Comfortable Palette is all about muted pastel tones paired with light natural tones for a feminine and sophisticated look, while the Composed Palette is deep and rich with earth colors and jewel tones that create a mysterious feel. Finally, the Confident Palette is bright and bold using exotic citrus like colors to embody feelings of adventure and drama for those design risk takers. On Behr's website there are a bunch of ideas on how to mix up the palettes for different types of styles.
