CHIEF RECORDS

PROJECT DESIGN STATEMENT
Chief Records Offices will have a fun, unique, unconventional design that captures the breathtaking landscape and popular landmarks of California as well as the distinct characteristics of the Punk, Alternative, and Rock music genres. The overall spatial concept and design style of the building will take employees, clients, and visitors on a musical road trip across California; traveling through Hollywood (1st floor majority), the Desert (part of 1st floor leading to 2nd floor), and finally ending in the Redwoods of Northern California (2nd floor majority).
Each space will be functional for the record company by utilizing the room features and furniture in creative multi-functional ways, equipped/intertwined with cutting-edge technology, and ultimately intended to inspire the employees to come up with fresh and innovative ideas to help further the success of Chief Records.

RESEARCH ON SIMILAR COMPANIES
CAPITOL RECORDS

Capitol Records is a major record label that is a part of the Capitol Music Group located in Los Angeles. Their target users are up a coming artists, employees, executives, and agents.
Capitol Records is just like Chief Records. They are apart of a bigger group and they work with the same genre of music artists. We want to use there space as an influence for our space but their design is a little too traditional for our concept.
GOOGLE HEADQUARTERS

Googleplex is Google’s headquarters located in Mountain View, California, however there are also other Google Headquarters located all over the world. They are responsible for the worlds most used search engine. Their target users are executives, managers employees, clients, etc. Although Google and a record company are not selling the same thing, the design concept is the same; they have a strong theme and focus on an unconventional work environment. Google has designed their headquarters so that each area has its own special theme and all of the decor follows that aesthetic to help bring the space to life.
MTV HEADQUARTERS

MTV Headquarters are all over the world, but the pictures are from the headquarters located in Toronto, Canada. MTV is a music television station that has become widely known for promoting and showcasing up and coming artists through music videos and special features. Their target users are up a coming artists, employees, executives, television producers and agents.
MTV Headquarters has a theme driven by conceptual design and organic shapes. There is also a nod to industrial design, where some areas are expansive with exposed ceilings and lots of metal finishes. This type of design will be important for us to use as inspiration...this way our overall design has some conceptual balance and drive instead of it being so literal.

CHIEF RECORDS TARGET USERS
Marketing/Promotion Group: Users for this group will include all marketing and advertising employees. This is where graphic designers, tour managers, the Brand/Product Management Manager, a Catalog Marketing Manager, Distribution Managers who would be in charge of marketing and promoting band memorabilia, the PR team, and Marketing Analysts. Employees from other departments, scouting & development/executive & legal (see specific group sections for details) staff might also work or enter this group’s area in order to discuss ideas, new bands/artists being signed that need marketing for upcoming concerts, legal issues, and other events. Bands/artists signed with label might visit this area to share ideas on how to promote themselves. A space with a lounge area will give the staff and the bands a more comfortable and relaxing place to talk, which could help produce more honest, creative ideas.
Scouting & Development Group: Users for this group will include all scouting agents and managers as well as the label’s development staff. This will include the Chief Records Executive Director who is in charge of signing artists; Managers pick acts they believe will be successful, Assistants handle all administrative work, and Scouts search for new artists. The development staff that will use this area will include producers, audio engineers, booking managers, and a business development manager. To accommodate these users there will need to be collaborative areas where they can meet and discuss upcoming projects, private areas with sound editing technology, and a meeting area for the scouters to talk to new bands/artists. Other users for this area might include the marketing/advertising employees (see Marketing/Promotions group for details) because they may need to work together during the signing process for bands/artists or promote a new one. This is the area where most outside visitors will visit since it is where the development and signing of new artists will take place. These outside users will include bands/artists interested in signing with the label, agents and managers, creative directors, as well as visitors who are interested in learning more about Chief Records.

Executive & Legal Group: Users for this group will include only the executive and legal department’s staff due to confidentiality issues. Accountants, Financial Assistants, the Chief Executive, the Label Director, Business Consultants, Business Managers, as well as other company executives will need a secure yet luxurious space to satisfy their needs. Human Resources will also inhabit this group. More specific legal staff that will utilize this area are Copyright Managers, Licensing employees, Music Attorneys, the Operations Manager, and Royalty Accounts Director. This whole area will be separated from other groups by walls and other security measures. To enter the space these users must have proper identification badges and codes to ensure the confidentiality of the labels documents and finances.
Overall Target Users: Users for the whole building will include all marketing/promotions staff, scouting & development staff, executive & legal staff, all bands/artists signed to the label, prospective bands/artists the label is interesting in signing, band/artist agents & managers, and any other outside visitors looking to learn more about Chief Records. The space will also be used by the receptionists on both floors, IT personnel, a personal chef for the executive dining, other food services staff, as well as janitorial service staff.

CIRCULATION STUDIES

Circulation throughout the space is important since the building is rather large and must accommodate over 300 occupants. These circulation plans are based off the block plans of each floor and are laid out to provide visitors with an optimal path of travel.
There will be an elevator located in the middle core of the building accessing both floors as well as a stairwell located on the east and west ends of the building for further access of each floor. The main means of egress will be considered the 101 freeway, filled with street and freeway signs for thematic wayfinding. This "freeway" will act as the main hallway for both floors with some smaller hallways known as "highways" that will branch out to other areas and "exits" along the way to get visitors to other parts of the building. Circulating through the space will be easy, straight forward, and play up our California theme.

SENSORY EXPERIENCE
Imagine yourself on a road trip through beautiful California, inspired by music and hitting all those iconic landscapes and locations...from Hollywood all the way up to the Redwood forests.

First, you start off the trip by seeing a few rock shows at the infamous Whiskey A Go Go along the sunset strip in Hollywood, before moving on, you stop at the Hollywood Bowl for a picnic dinner and concert. Then, you jump on the highway heading east right into the popular desert festival, Coachella. You start to feel the warm desert breeze as it travels through the rolled down car window, admiring the awe-inspiring views of the surrounding landscape. After watching all of the amazing performances and enjoying a one-of-a-kind magical sunset, you head up north to view the stunning sights of San Francisco. Hop on a historic Trolley Car and adventure through the city before exploring the musical scene of Haight & Ashbury. Finally, you finish off your grand California road trip in the expansive Redwood forest, filled with trees as high as the eye can see.
We want the design of Chief Records to capture that road trip feeling and the essence of the California scenery while music fills your ears with the sounds of memories.

DESIGN PROBLEMS & SOLUTIONS
SAFETY & SECURITY
PROBLEMS:
Chief Records has a high end clientele so security is of the utmost importance. Clients have to be able to move through the building without feeling crowded or uneasy. Not only do we have to consider the clientele we have but also look out for the safety of the employees and any physical confidential records or documentation. Nowadays cyber security is almost more important than physical security. Important contractual and financial documents as well as internal business strategies will need to be protected from outside penetration.

SOLUTIONS:
There are security cameras placed all throughout the interior space as well as the exterior space. There will be a key card access only entry at all the main entrances as well as the executive area. The only people who are allowed on site have key card access or are invited in due to confidentiality and safety issues. A cyber- security firm will also be contracted to monitor and protect important documents and information stored online.

WAY FINDING
PROBLEMS:
Chief Records’ new space is roughly 15,000 square feet, so helping people navigate through the space is important. The three groups who employ Chief Records need to not only be separated but also be easily visually distinguishable from each other. A main “road” needs to be established early on to limit confusion from visitors.

SOLUTIONS:
To go along with our road trip theme all way finding will be done through freeway signs. Exit signs will be used to show exits and to find your way to a certain area or room. The main hallways will be labeled the 101 and the other hallways will be “on ramps” to smaller freeways and highways. The restrooms and break room can be located by a “Rest Stop” sign. The reception will have a directory in the shape of California it will show you how to navigate through the space by using highways or by locating the “city” you are trying to reach. The three main groups are cities along the way and are also designated by the interior surroundings. The cities we chose are San Francisco, Hollywood and Indio.

ADA & UNIVERSAL DESIGN
PROBLEMS:
Within this space it is absolutely crucial and required that we design this space for all types of clientele and employees. Every aspect of this design must be ADA accessible and universally designed, and preferably designed to preserve the dignity of those who will be accessing the amenities while keeping the core themes of the building intact.

SOLUTIONS:
As per code, the whole space will be ADA accessible. There is an elevator in the middle of the facility for use as well as two stairwells. All restrooms will also have at least one accessible stall will enough space to move around within it. Counter tops will have a separate area where it will be at an accessible height if the whole counter is not already. We will also have accessible workstations throughout for easy access. There are no changes in floor heights as of now, so there will be no need for ramps.

COLOR & FINISHES

PROBLEMS:
The design concept is so thematic that it will be challenging to tie in all of the spaces for the design to make sense as a whole. Transition paint colors will have to be neutral enough for the spaces to come together and not look jumbled. Flooring transitions are also crucial so the same flooring throughout in most places is probably best. The designs need to be individualistic enough to differentiate from each other, but not so out there as to seem untied to the central theme; each area needs to act as a branch from one central tree.
SOLUTIONS:

Reception and Scouting / Development Group
The color scheme for these two areas is bright, bold, & rebellious. Punk rock in Hollywood is known for having fans as well as the band in head to toe black with red and blue accents throughout. Black and white murals of famous rock bands are featured on a few walls where our field color or accent paints are not. Wall covering with subtle patterns will also be brought into these areas. Carpet tile and luxury vinyl tile will be the primary flooring options.
Advertising / Marketing Group:
For this group Coachella Music Festival is our inspiration. Neutral and muted colors fill up our color pallet along with tribal, geometric patterns that will help represent this desert location. There will also be murals of bands and scenery that you would see if you were attending the festival. This color scheme will be on the bottom floor and will also transition up onto the second floor.
Executive / Legal Group:
Dark, rich and earthy tones will fill the executive and legal group’s side of the building which will also represent their hierarchical standing. The thematic concept of this group is the redwoods of Northern California. The music aspect of this group took a back seat while the beautiful scenery of Northern California will make these execs right at home.

ACOUSTICS
PROBLEMS:
Sound Design in today’s workplace combines individual introspection with group sharing and brainstorm sessions. Studies have shown that a noisy office is actually counterproductive for the average employee; speech privacy and excessive reverberation time can be addressed with acoustical solutions. There are three groups in this space and we will need to take the private areas and the open areas into consideration during the space planning process.

SOLUTIONS:
Acoustics throughout will be a huge priority for the design because there are certain areas conducive of confidential conversations. Sound paneling will be disguised in wall panels and fabrics within the spaces needing acoustical privacy. It is important that we don’t ruin the design concept with boring acoustical paneling or vise versa.
FURNITURE

PROBLEMS:
Furniture will help tie in the themes but the style of furniture will be different throughout. The furniture will have to be comfortable and ergonomically functional in order to help the employees thrive. The employees spend all day in their work spaces and it is important that we service their needs. The furniture will help bring the whole space together and needs to not only function as needed but also be a piece of the whole picture.

SOLUTIONS:
In the Hollywood areas the furniture will be heavier. We chose leather sofas and printed chairs to bring a bold statement to this area since it is the most seen. There will also be guitar pick shaped tables to tie it all in. The Coachella (Indio) area will have lighter furniture. Clean lines and simple desks and chairs throughout will give the space an airy feel. The San Francisco area will also be bold but it will have a luxury feel. Dark wood desks and storage units with luxury padded chairs to give off a sense of importance and elegance within the space. All Steel furniture will be used throughout to make the space feel modern and tie it all together.
